The representative from La Gomera wins the Pujada Coll de Femenia and takes the lead in the national competition. Despite competing in unfamiliar territory, his Porsche 911 991.1 GT3 wins two of the three race stages. His final advantage over the next placed driver is around three seconds.
José Manuel González begins his journey in the Spanish Mountain Cup (CEM) with a victory in the Pujada Coll de Femenia. The ambassador of the island of La Gomera, at the controls of his Porsche 911 991.1 GT3, thus presents his credentials for the national title. In a race that he was unfamiliar with, and against a significant number of local drivers, he managed to win with ease. His primary objective, which was none other than to score points, was more than fulfilled on the island of Mallorca.
The climb located in the municipality of Pollença, one of the most iconic in Balearic motorsport, was the one in charge of kicking off a CEM that has become the Canarian athlete’s top priority. Although, for reasons beyond his control, he did not have time to prepare for the weekend, González started the day on a positive note. He won the two practice runs, which served as a reference point, by notable margins.
Then, in the official rounds, José Manuel reaffirmed his superiority over the 6.0 kilometres of the Mallorcan slope. The twelve-time Canarian champion of the discipline combined consistency and speed in equal parts to minimise the chances of his rivals. The sum of his times in Race 1 and Race 3 was what proclaimed him the winner of the inaugural CEM event. He gave 2.859″ to the next classified and secured the maximum points haul. A better result, impossible.
“The effort has been worth it”, says the leader of the CEM. “My thanks to the sponsors, the family and the whole team. The race was hard fought from the beginning. We played everything in the last round with Kike Perelló, a local driver who competed with a car identical to ours. We are very happy with the result, which gives us a boost of energy and desire for the next rounds of the competition”, concludes the standard-bearer of Gomera AutoRacing.
The Spanish Mountain Cup will resume on April 11 and 12 in Jaén on the occasion of the La Mota Hill Climb. After the Andalusian ramp will come the first of the events scheduled in the Canary Islands, the Hermigua – La Carbonera Hill Climb (May 9-10). In the final stretch of the campaign, two other hill climbs will be held in the Archipelago, both based on the South Tenerife: the Arona – La Escalona Hill Climb (14-15 November) and the Tamaimo Hill Climb (28-29 November).
José Manuel González’s programme within the Spanish Mountain Cup (CEM) has the support of the Island Council of La Gomera, La Gomera Biosphere Reserve, San Sebastián de La Gomera Town Council, KoniCanarias, SPAR La Gomera, Argom, FotoVídeo Gomera, Kaligomera, Gomera Hostel and Asesoría Astecu.
